Scholars debate impact of Zogby Poll

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has published the results of the Zogby Poll (see below). I strongly object to the map they chose to publish, on both religious and political grounds (excuse me, people, but the entire State of Ohio is not in the Bible Belt -- nor, for that matter, is it a Canadian-liberal "blue state", either...) However, the content of the article is sound, correctly representing the schools of thought on the constitutionality of secession; and the comments are interesting.

This kind of coverage from the mainstream media (also see this item from radio station KTRH in Houston) indicates that the idea of secession is far less taboo than it was even a few months ago.

I think everyone, including myself, was surprised that the support for secession was as high as 18% across the U.S., which should tell everyone that we have a serious problem -- and it is getting worse.

It appears that Ohio was split between the blue and the red. Thought that may not be, strictly speaking, correct geographically, it's not an unreasonable concept.

With the exception of one poster at the St. Louis Dispatch blog article about the secessionist poll, it's surprising to see the uninformed, simplistic level of discourse in the comments. Few really seem to get what it is that's driving some people to support the idea of secession.

Personally, I can't seem to make up my mind on the idea, but secessionists are among the few who are discussing the real problems of the nation. Most of the country appears to be stuck in a corporate media and political elite driven haze of ignorance.
