Here's how we can put Humpty together again

There are signs that our food distribution system is beginning to fall apart. The New York Sun reported on Tuesday that rationing of some items has already begun to take place in New York and California. We need to prepare for the day when we will have to rely on local farmers (not Kroger, Giant Eagle, or Wal-Mart) to provide our food.

The Daily Mail reports of a village in England that has already done this, with amazing and very positive results. Such as better quality food and a much more satisfying sense of community.

Thanks to Rebellion for bringing this to my attention.

You'd be surprised at how much food you can grow in your own back yard using bio-intensive gardening techniques and a cold frame or two to extend your harvest well into the winter months.

Read the books: "The Four Season Harvest" by Eliot Coleman and "How to Grow More Food Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine" by John Jeavons.

I've really ramped up my gardening over the past couple of years. I replaced some space in the flower beds with blueberry bushes. I've got strawberries, raspberries and blackberries in the back yard plus well over 200 square feet of bio-intensive gardening space.

I'm planning for fruit trees in the front yard and I still have plenty of backyard left to expand in the future.

My lot is 0.22 acres minus the driveway and 1770 square feet for the house.

Something else for you to look into and post about: Local currencies. From the Totnes Pound (UK) to Ithaca Hours in Ithaca New York, local currencies keep a portion of economic activity local and out of the hands of multi-national corporations.
